7 Questions to Ask When Considering Your Medicare Options

California Senior Guide Staff

Whether you’re new to Medicare or reviewing your current coverage, understanding your options can help you make informed healthcare decisions. With changes coming to Medicare coverage in 2027, it’s also important to know what may be changing and what matters most to your care.

As you explore your Medicare options, here are seven questions to consider.

1. Will I have access to the doctors I know and trust?

If seeing certain doctors is important to you, consider how your Medicare choices may affect where and from whom you receive care.

2. What could I pay for my healthcare and medications?

Look beyond the monthly premium. Deductibles, copays, coinsurance and prescription drug costs can all contribute to what you pay for healthcare throughout the year.

3. What healthcare services are important to me?

Think about the care you currently receive or may need in the coming year. Consider where you prefer to receive care and whether access to particular healthcare services or facilities matters to you.

4. How are my medications covered?

Review the prescription medications you take and how they are covered. Your costs and coverage may vary, so understanding your prescription drug benefits is an important part of considering your options.

5. Will I need referrals or prior authorization for certain care?

Different coverage options may have different requirements for accessing care. Knowing when a referral or prior authorization may be required can help you understand what to expect.

6. What happens if my healthcare needs change?

Your needs today may not be the same several months from now. Consider how your coverage may work if you need different doctors, medications or healthcare services during the year.

7. Do I know the important Medicare dates and deadlines?

Medicare has specific enrollment periods and deadlines. Knowing when you can make coverage decisions or changes, and when those choices take effect, can help you avoid missing an important opportunity.
